1) July Users' Group meeting - ART DIRECTION
Topic: Art Direction
Our venue will be perfect for this topic. If you haven't seen the work from the folks at Gemini School and Big Sesh Studios ..take a look. Roger Barcilon and Matt Stubbington are rooted firmly in the fine arts and have been developing students' techniques for a long time...including instructing artists onsite at game studios. Be sure to check out the work on the Big Sesh link. You will surely recognize it.
They are very excited to host our group, and our meeting will begin with Gemini Staff (Roger Barcilon?) who'll give us a bit of history and tour of the school.
Afterward, we'll have a panel discussion on Art Direction, exploring the issues involved in completing a project. What is art direction, exactly? Why is it so necessary? Who does it involve? Any of us who have been asked to "make something cool" have a pretty good idea why large projects need direction. An important component of art direction is communication. We'll discuss how a project's "look" is decided, and how the style is conveyed to the contributors. Other aspects include the aesthetic and technical constraints, consistency, and schedule challenges.
Panelists include:
Sara Farr (Post-Production, Software & Games, Currently ACC)
Doug Prince (EA,Maxis, Origin, Currently NCsoft)
Sergio Rosas (Ion Storm, Currently Midway)
Bren Wilson (NCsoft, Origin)
Roger Barcilon will be available as a resource for this discussion.
We'll have beverages courtesy of Gemini, and catered treats from April Orr (wife of UG member Kevin Orr) via her wedding catering business "An Affair to Remember." Thanks April!
* Tom Guthery will be sharing some of his latest projects with us: Computer aided dentistry - CEREC, Soft Touch Chiropractic - mechanism of action of chiropractic
If you have show-and-tell for the group, please email us so we can be ready for you.
ALSO, please send us a message if you plan to come. This is an informal RSVP (meaning if you forget to respond, you are still welcome to attend.) It will help us plan for seating and treats.

3)Tidbits:
SPECIAL THANKS to Marla Smith, who graciously hosted our Austin Architecture & Engineering Roundtable with Autodesk's Kelcey Simpson on Thursday, July 13 at the UT School of Architecture. We had an excellent discussion, with copious feedback about interoperability between products. Thanks also to everyone who participated and shared their opinions.
The Texas Independent Game Conference took place Saturday and Sunday June 22nd and 23rd. While we weren't able to put together a meeting at this event as we had initially hoped, we were able to sponsor the Sunday Lunch, & many of our members were able to attend.
We've had a few issues in the past with our group list, and continue to discover people who are not receiving these updates. If you know anyone who we should check on, please let us know. Invite your friends! Let's keep Austin's 3D scene in motion.
If you have more ideas for content, venue suggestions, or show and tell for the group, please let us know.
See you next week! : )
