Next Event:  Keisler Automotive Tech Session

Saturday, January 19, 10:00 am

You will not want to miss out first tech session on January 19th at Keisler Automotive.  I’m sure you saw the very interesting article on pages 12-15 of the November-December issue of Jaguar Journal in which an owner of a 1994 Jaguar XJ-12 from Oklahoma describes the performance and appearance improvements done to his Jaguar by Keisler.  The article also describes the transmission conversions that Keisler has done for XJSs.  Also, if you subscribe to Jaguar World, see pages 76-77 of the March 2000 for a description of the 5-speed conversion done by Keisler.  The topic for our tech session will be: Maintenance and Performance Enhancement of Jaguar V-12 Cars (XJS, XJ12, XJ12C).  Shafi Keisler and his staff will give us a program that will include their transmission conversion from automatic to 5-speed for the V-12 cars and also for the XJ6.

The directions to the new location of Keisler Automotive at 2216-B West Gov. John Sevier Highway (Highway 168) is as follows: the business is located 2.6 miles east of Alcoa Highway (Highway 129) just passed Martin Mill Pike.  It is just east of a Citgo station and next to a building for Price Equipment on the south side of the road.  Shafi Keisler tells me they have a new sign reading Keisler Automotive with a big K and will try to have it up by the day of the meeting. The building also houses a landscaping business.

After the tech session, we will drive to a restaurant for lunch and a brief SMJC meeting.  The restaurant is Kiger’s which is located on Highway 33, one mile south of Gov. John Sevier Highway.  The intersection of Highway 33 and Gov. John Sevier is one mile east of Highway 129.  Be sure to attend this meeting at a company that has brought international Jaguar attention to our area.

It's a Party and We’re Invited

I’ve just learned that the English Auto Society (EAS) has an event planned this Saturday, January 12, and we are invited.  This event will be a drive and trip to the new Tennessee Museum of Aviation at the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport.  Access is by Air Museum Way off Dolly Parton Parkway (US 411) 2 miles north of the intersection of US 441/411 and Route 66 at the entrance to Sevierville.  The museum just opened December 15 and is housed in a 35,000 square foot hangar.

The museum contains a Soviet built MIG 17 used in the Korean War by North Korea and an MIG 21 flown in Poland.  In the collection, there are also two P-41D Thunderbolts, aT-33 Shooting Star and many exhibits on the history of aviation.  The admission price is $9.95, 65 and older $7.95, children 6-12 $5.95 and free under 5 years old but Tom Whitfield, EAS and SMJC member, is trying to obtain a group price for us.  The group will meet in Knoxville at CiCi’s Pizza, 2885 Tazewell Pike at Broadway and I-640 at 10:00am on Saturday, January 12 for the drive to the museum.

February Meeting to be at British Motor Specialists

The February meeting will be a second tech session held at British Motor Specialists in Kingsport.  The tech session will be conducted by owner and SMJC member John Nance at 10:30 am on Sunday, February 24th. We will adjourn to a nearby restaurant for lunch afterwards.  The topic will be the Delanair Mark II Environmental Control System.  This system was used on Jaguar Series II and III XJ6/12 from 1974-87 and Jaguar XJS from 1975-87.  There will be a car in his shop to help explain the system.  Likely problem areas will be discussed and there will be handouts.  I, for one, am looking forward to this meeting, as the air conditioning is not working on my 1984 XJ6.  Directions and more details will be given in the February newsletter.

Jaguar Wedding Car Wanted

We received the following message regarding a desire for a wedding car. “I am getting married April 27, 2002 and am looking for a kind person who owns a beautiful 1950s/1960s British automobile (would love a vintage Jaguar, but will consider all makes and models). My fiancé Philip's parents are British (and lived in Johnson City for 23 years before recently moving to Nashville).

We would love to surprise them by leaving our reception in a vintage British automobile. I think they would get a big kick out of it. In turn, Phil and I would have a truly memorable departure.  Do you happen to know anyone who would be willing to come to Knoxville and be part of our special day? I will compensate this person for their time and extreme kindness. We think it would be the perfect end to a perfect day.  Would you consider including a "Wanted - Beautiful British auto for afternoon wedding in Knoxville" ad in your next newsletter or mention it at your next meeting? I would sincerely appreciate it.  Thank you for your time, Lori Martin (soon to be Calvert) 865-524-4821 home or 865-560-3975 work.  LoriMartinl@aol.com

If any of you have a Mark 4, Mark 5, Mark 7,8,9, Mark 10 or 420G in good condition, I'm sure Lori would be thrilled.  Contact Lori directly but keep your newsletter editor informed, as I would like to obtain a photo for our newsletter.  I know of one contact that has been made regarding the possible use of a 420G but this person indicates that a Mark 7, 8 or 9 would be even better for this purpose.  The use of classic Jaguars as wedding cars is quite common in the U.K.

A nice a wedding car!!

New Members, 2002 Dues, and Newsletter Name Voting

Dues received for 2002 so far indicate two new members.   Bill Bost of Oak Ridge and Susan Wahl of Atlanta and Beech Mountain, NC.  Welcome to the club.  They are the 48th and 49th members to join but we have 12 members from whom we have not received the 2002 renewal dues.

If you have not done so already, please send your 2002 dues and renewal/application form to be found at the end of this newsletter along with your check for $30 to our treasurer, Chic Meyer, as indicated on the form unless your have done so already.

WE CAN STILL INSURE UNINTERUPTED DELIVERY OF YOUR JAGUAR JOURNAL MAGAZINE IF WE RECEIVE YOUR CHECK AND FORM WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

You will note that our newsletter now has the name The Mountain Jaguar.  The results of the votes received by December 31 were:

Cat Chat                   8

Cat Scratchings        0

Jaguars-We-Are      1

Jag Words                1

Mountain Jaguar   18

I might add that Mountain Jaguar obtained favorable comments from other JCNA newsletter editors and fits the logo we adopted last month so I think we made a good choice.

Commercial Advertising Rates

In The Mountain Jaguar, we offer free classified ads to SMJC members selling Jaguar cars or parts, which run for three issues unless cancelled.  The Board has now agreed to run classified ads for non-members for $5 for two issues.  The Board has also set the following commercial ad rates for businesses.  These ads will probably, but not necessarily, be Jaguar related.  The rates are in line with the lowest offered by other JCNA clubs.  Please send your business card or ad copy to Bob Reid, SMJC Newsletter Editor, 528 Fox Rd, Knoxville, TN 37922.
