Dry Bones on the March: The Great Winfield Anti-Saloon Uprising of February 1901 by Jerry L. Wallace. 74 pp. $9.00 each + postage and handling of $3.00 = $12.00.
This volume recounts the anti-saloon uprising that took place in Winfield in February 1901 simultaneous with Carry Nation's "hatchation" crusade in Kansas. After the "smashing" of a local saloon by students from Southwestern College, the situation in Winfield quickly deteriorated until the anti- and pro-saloon forces were on the verge of civil war--each side being armed and prepared for battle. Only a spark was needed to set off an explosion of violence. City leaders worked frantically to claim the situation. The drama of it all captured national attention, making even the pages of the New York Times and other major urban papers. This volume tells the complete story of this little known event, which most Winfielders, once it was over, wanted to forget. Included are illustrations, interesting addenda, and enlightening endnotes. (Note: This is the full, uncut version with addenda and endnotes, rather than the shorter version included in the CWH booklet.)
